Homebrew ABV Calculator

Ever wonder how much alcohol your homebrew contains?

Whether it's Wine, beer, or mead, it's pretty simple to determine your brew's ABV. First, you'll need a few things:

  • Hydrometer - This is what's used to measure the gravity of your brew
  • Sample of your brew
  • Time!

You're probably wondering "What in tarnation is a hydrometer and where do I get one of those doodads?"

A hydrometer is a simple yet powerful measurement tool used in brewing, winemaking, and other industries to determine the specific gravity or density of liquids. It consists of a glass tube with a weighted bulb at the bottom and a graduated scale along its length.

  1. Fill a test jar with the liquid to be tested.

  2. Gently insert the hydrometer into the test jar and spin it slowly to release any trapped air bubbles.

  3. Read the initial hydrometer reading at the liquid surface level.

  4. Record the reading and save until the liquid is finished fermenting.

  5. Once the liquid is finished fermenting and any extra ingredients have been added, make the final reading and subtract the initial reading to obtain the difference.

  6. Using the calculator on the right - Add the initial reading (Original Gravity), then add the Final reading (Final Gravity).

Note: It is important to use a clean and sanitized hydrometer and test jar for accurate results.
